A Conversation on New Moon Intention Setting: Is It Total BS?

Today is the total solar eclipse and new moon in Leo, and everyone is freaking out. With all this talk about new moon rituals, crystals, and “trusting the universe” how do we know this isn’t all BS? I want to talk about my own perspective on this wellness trend.

If this all seems a little out there for you, but you’re curious (and confused!) don’t worry…I got you.

Let’s begin.

What is intention setting anyways?

Intention setting is a practice of writing/and or speaking the things that you want in your life, and releasing all that into the universe. Think of it as kind of like a wish list.

People say to trust the universe, but here’s where we need to draw some sort of line.

It’s not about wishing on a star and just expecting the universe to do the work for you. It’s about taking control of the parts of your life that you can, while surrendering to the things that are out of your control.

You can write a list in your journal or in your phone notes. It can be as short or as long as you like. You can write just words, or draw. Intention setting is a personal practice, so do whatever is best for you.

Some good places to start:

  • what can you let go of that no longer serves you (a petty argument, anger, worrying about the unknown…etc.)
  • what is the main thing in your life you want to change?

If you don’t want to or don’t have the time to do a full-blown ritual with candles, crystals, sage, palo santo…then don’t.

Do I really need crystals and incense, a ritual, and all that other fancy looking stuff in order to set intentions or truly manifest what I want?

In my opinion, no. But if you’re into it then that’s cool too. A good old journal will do just the trick.

Do I need to wait until the new moon to set intentions?

Again, that’s a no. Like New Year’s Resolutions or waiting until Monday to start, if you really want to achieve something then the best time to start is now. And if you just missed the new moon, don’t worry about that either.

If I don’t need all that stuff then WTF is the point?

Here’s the thing: the moon holds a powerful energy. For hundreds of years, farmers and fishermen used the moon to determine when to plant/harvest crops and the best fishing times according to the tides. Can you guess when farmers would plant their seeds? The new moon.

So for me, the new moon is the best time to plant seeds or intentions of my own.

The bottom line is, if it’s meaningful for you then do it. If you think it’s BS, then that’s cool too.
